This
piece is a most unusual cloth saddle blanket made for use
by a lamasery's private yak. While this yak was probably never
ridden like a horse or donkey, trade goods for the monks were
carried on its back to market. The design, featuring many
small circles with green and red crosses, was actually stamped
onto the fabric by a lama using a molded tool dye. The green
base color indicates that this is an older carpet, as this
shade of green is a very difficult vegetable dye to produce
and has given way to more common reds and purples. The top
is a typical native woven Tibetan cloth of a type that most
closely resembles felt. This piece would be best displayed
as a wall hanging.
