A
single central medallion of stylized peony flowers combined
into a geometric design. The medallion is surrounded by butterflies
and more peony flowers. The butterfly is a Chinese symbol
of joy and summertime.The peony flower is a Chinese symbol
of the Yang, and is know as the flower of masculinity. The
peony is regarded by the Chinese as the sign of spring and
an omen of good fortune. The border of this rug has more butterflies
and the mounatin and sea design repeated, which in this case
are probably the symbols for the universe and calm waters.
Cotton warp and weft, asymmetrical woolen knots. All vegetable
dyed. There is one small repair and a few smalll place of
wear out.
