This
carpet features a central medallion surrounded
by peony flowers. The medallion is composed
of stylized flowers arranged in a geometric
pattern including four flyfot symbols. The peony
flowers are the symbol of the male principle
know as the Yang. The peony is regarded as a
sign of spring and an omen of good fortune and
love. The red colour in this carpet is especially
good and rare probably coming fom a combination
of Carthamus tinctorius and safflower. The border
is a series of peony flowers and the three fruits
design. The three fruits are the the peach,
the pomegranate and the citron which represent
marriage, fertility and happiness, respectively.
Cotton warp and weft, asymmetrical woollen knots.
All vegetable dyed. Very good condition.
