This very elegant carpet from Baotao
in inner Mongolia features an auspicious eight
peony flowers on a field of blue. The peony
is regarded by the Chinese as yang, the male
element, and is thought to be a sign of spring,
an omen of good fortune and an emblem of love
and affection. These peonies are especially
well woven. Cotton warp and weft, asymmetrical
woolen knots and all vegetable dye. There is
one small repair on it.
