This
piece is a most unusual cloth saddle blanket made for use
by a lamasery's private yak. While this yak was probably never
ridden like a horse or donkey, trade goods for the monks were
carried on its back to market. The design, featuring many
small circles with a cross, were actually stamped onto the
fabric by a lama using a molded tool dye. A lucky white silk
scarf (hada)has been added at some time in the far past which
shows the level of affection and honor that the yak's owner
placed upon this animal. The top is typical native woven Tibetan
cloth of a more complex design. The piece would be best displayed
as a wall hanging.
